Re: Vanderslice and Rollins went a long way in that direction this week. MSD seemed to be reluctantly moving to a similar position.

No kidding! That seem'd really obvious during the analyst conference. It was almost as if they were trying to temper Michael's statements at every opportunity... somewhat of a first.

I think you are right about 'overconfidence on the part of management about how quickly they could move into enterprise and storage'. Another area that is experiencing a drag is desktops which was compounded by Intel's bet on RAMBUS and the significant gap between the 810 and 820 chipsets. It hurt Dell's ability to grow market share specifically in the transactional/consumer/SOHO markets.

This may line up with the stated weakness there because of the hole they experienced in their product lineup. The AMD/VIA singular focus and bet on PC133 where Intel left the door wide open was the right move at the right time and has helped them and OEM's who use them gain market share in this segment. I don't think we will see the same weakness in this segment from Compaq this quarter.

There seem to be no such holes in the Mobile offerings and thank goodness Dell chose ServerWorks for their Server platforms.

But in light of the promises Dell had been making, any drag on growth in any of their businesses could spell disaster. And regarding the stock performance, it did.
