long-gone: Images really stick with me. I read a year or so ago about a fella down in the States (I don't even know where I read it or if I saved it) many years ago got bit by a coyote, and figured he might have contracted rabies.

He knew he had a couple of days to get things in order, so he set about working around the farm, making everything ship-shape. He didn't even tell his wife and kids.

One day, dad didn't show up for supper. The family went looking for him, and found him a few days later, miles and miles away. He had taken lengths of chain and a supply of water. He had chained himself to a big old tree, and died there.

I won't go into the graphic detail of the state they found the tree in, and the ground around the tree. But by the story, he must have died a horrible death.

Apparently he left a note explaining that he knew he had little chance of surviving (way back then, there was no cure). He also knew if he hadn't done what he done, he would have gone mad and killed his family, or worse, bit one of them who would have contracted rabies, too.
