You'd have to be quite a pragmatist to polarize yourself alongside either of these two gents. To be honest, even someone whom I considered a great president (Teddy Roosevelt) had a very intolerant streak in him and huge ego.

These character defects prevent me from setting him up on a pedestal. We need to be clear that this election, at least IMO, is about the erosion of personal liberty. As a free thinker, my opinions are sometimes outside the box of society. I'm not saying that my morals allow me to express hubris and disregard for others, just that I don't get worked up about things other people do.

Since I feel that way, I'm inclined to think that this country should be about tolerance and allowing everyone a place to exist, and that boiler plate issues being discussed like whether Gore was taking Commie money hid the real issues. If you're going to to ask that question, then you also have to ask if "liberating Kuwait" where less than 10% of the people there (that are related to the royal family) can vote is a "democracy". And that the Bush family had oil interests.

I think many leaders in both parties end up in morally ambiguous situations and I would even offer that there appears to be an overwhelming gradient pushing them in that direction.

This election is like my offer to paint your house with tree sap or tar. Neither is really a very good choice and neither is what YOU want, namely, paint. But both will waterproof your house. It sounds like your pretty sure the Republican tree sap is the better choice. I'm not convinced. But I'm not a fan of tar either.
