panic mob:

Looks like now that the consumer PC market has been reshaped by AMD, AMD is setting its sights on the mobile market...Can't wait to see those mobile Athys...Suspect their price/performance advantage over the mobile competition will be even greater than the current Duron/Athlon price/performance gap that exists at all MHz ranges in the consumer marketplace...Yes, virtually unlimited growth potential exists for the Athlon derivatives through Y2001...Dresden capacity will be the limiting factor in Y2001 methinks!!!

I just don't think SONY introduces their first AMD-powered computer because it's such a wonderful chip

If what Paul suggests about the mobile market is true (AMD are losing market share) then it is inevitable that at some point Intel will increase prices on those processors to try and replace lost revenue in the desktop sector. Sony are showing a lot of business sense in adding a second string to their bow.

Having a single supplier policy is a bad idea when that supplier is having trouble. Watch Dell suffer when Intel's P3 binsplits mean they cannot match AMD's pricing at the high end of the desktop market.

panic,

<check this out:

Thanks for posting. This is good news. AMD in Sony laptops is a great break through for AMD. I was waiting for these systems to was showup for a while since I saw the report in CNET a while back. I am curious as hell how AMD is getting new design wins for K6 in laptops this late in the game.

<I would love to buy a VAIO with a Duron 800MHZ. >

SO, would I.

<Hopefully, this notebook deal is just a prelude. >

I am 99% certain it is. Larger companies like Sony (especially a Japanese one) don't engage a vendor for a one-shot deal. This is very likely a beginning of a long fruitful relationship between AMD and Sony.

<I just don't think SONY introduces their first AMD-powered computer because it's such a wonderful chip. >

Some folks may go as far as saying that K6 stinks and SONY does not care for its customers.

<There must be something more comming from SONY. What do you think? >

I completely agree with you.
