Dealer, sorry. The issue is so front burner and there is, hopefully, so much interest. However, if that is the feeling of the thread I will certainly stop posting relating to politics.

Dealer:

Thank you. Very well handled, and just in the nick of time, as always.

I feel as if I have been severely reprimanded for doing exactly what is encouraged in the header - following a discussion that tickled my fancy.

I am indeed a so-far undecided voter, and I will vote. I think this election is very important.

I sought to speak in a cogent, respectful voice, and I think I did.

I did not see one complaint about the subject, or my demeanor, publicly or privately. (I wonder how many complaints you got and why those who complained felt the necessity to do so privately.)

I was pretty shocked to see your red letter post dictating the cessation of political discussions here. It is the people here whose opinions I respect that I desire to hear from. I have no idea what the vantage point of the posters on the other threads you mentioned is and to what extent they are ranting instead of thinking.

I didn't realize that a respectful, concerned exercise of democracy, pertinent to our country's future, was out of line.

I will comply. I apologize.

<<<font color=red>Please! No More Political Discussion On This Thread:>>

THANK YOU !!

I realize the porch is a place where we can go and talk about anything, but I do agree this bush gore thing has gotten out of hand.

Yesterday morning I signed on to see over 300 posts. My first inclination was that the market tanked....people are bummed and are discussing what to do...where the market heads from here....margin....calls......etc, etc....instead I had to weed thru over 300 posts in which less then 10 I believe actually had something other to do then Bush/Gore.

Now today I sign on...hoping for a little feedback on what the market will do tomorrow as I will not be able to re-visit this thread until tomorrow AM. What do I get....BUSH?GORE.

Listen folks, no matter how much anybody screams, whines and cries, no matter how many people would rather have mickey mouse as our president, it does not matter. Either Bush or Gore will be it, and we have no choice but to live with it or leave the country.

This is a safe house where friends of Voltaire can meet to discuss any topic that tickles their fancy.

Well, perhaps the heading should be changed to say ALMOST any topic.

Re: Cessation of posts regarding politics on this thread

As a long time lurker on this thread and the previous one, I reacted to your post with mixed emotions. Yes, the number of posts on politics are a bit much -- though it is easy enough to skim/skip through any posts - political or otherwise - to the extent that one wishes to do so. What I found rather more bothersome, was the notion that you would have a private conversation with Voltaire and then issue a dictum - albeit stated as a "request" - based on numerous private messages that you received. Why don't these faceless individuals just come out and express their feelings in public - in fact, why not ask them to do just that before one makes the type of unilateral decision that you did? As others have stated, the header on this thread is one that certainly did not prohibit the discussion of politics!

I would suggest that in the future, when an issue such as this comes up, perhaps it would be best left to some kind of vote by the porchers as to how they would like to deal with it. After all, if Milosovic can be subject to the democratic process, why not this thread!-g-

The outcome of this election is very relevant to the prospects for the market. Are we to have a Republican or Democrat as our next president -- and who will control the House and Senate? It has been suggested that this will be the closest election in US history, in that, not only is presidential race close but so is the race for control of the House and the Senate.

Hard as it may be to believe, a few of the opinions expressed by various individuals have made for interesting reading to this lurker who is truly undecided as to who will get my vote. The links that you have suggested are far too vitriolic for me -- the porch, perhaps because of the camaraderie that exists, has indulged in a much more civil discussion for the most part.

As one who is unabashedly liberal, I am torn as to what to do this go around, given the choices we have between:

Gore, who is so decidedly lacking in integrity, that I find it difficult to believe anything that he says.

Bush, who seems a decent enough a person, but who is probably one of the least qualified candidates - in the past 50 years - to run for office on a major national ticket.

Buchanan, who comes close to being a fascist and

Nader, who does not have a chance of winning - therefore, is a vote for Nader a wasted vote?

I trust that my comments will not cause me to be "moderated" out of the porch!-g-

Sorry for any role I played in the improper melee, which was inadvertent, unintentional, and done in the heat of passion, and which was solely the result of the large amounts of iced tea I drank. In fact, I was in the bathroom the whole time. Come to think of it, I deny that it ever took place.

Cowering under the porch, can I come out, now, please?

I'm not a big fan of censorship. While I think it is reasonable to keep this thread free of personal attacks, it is not reasonable to tell people about what issues they are or are not welcome to post. If someone wants to make political posts, I'm all for it, even if I disagree with them. If they want to make repeated personal attacks, then we need to discuss booting them, and only boot them if they are way out of line -- something that I hope will be a rare event. I suggest we encourage people to post their political opinions, and to preface the post with the words "Political Opinion" so that those not interested in reading them can ingore them.

A popular solution when a single topic becomes as large as the thread itself is to start a new thread just for that topic. In this case "The Political Porch" or some such thing so that the same group can carry on that conversation on the site without filling up too much of a specific thread.
