Glenn. I do not believe Ariba has anything proprietary.
I believe it was born out of the Wishes Of MSDW to make something out of nothing (ariba - well a nice name anyway). The technologies involved with interaction on the web are very simple and becoming easier every day. Thus the barriers to entry in this space are low....Scalability of many many products on the market allow for excellent competition going forward. Allaire for example (which I have recently lost a tremendous amount on) has products ranging from 1200 dollars to nearly 100 thousand dollars and supposedly they have 170 sales in their pipeline of the higher end products. (170 High end sales is nothing to ignore) Yet they have a valuation of ~1.4 Price/Cash and are profitable,,, revenues growing >100% YOY.

If this is such a high margin space then believe me,,,,*Everybody* will be doing it. SEBL, ORCL, ect. ect. ect.....

If you don't believe that...read the story about the founders of datek....and how they programmed their marketplace (ECN)....it is a fascinating story.
