- I do not believe the cross-licensing deal that RDRAM mfg's signed with Rambus covers this situation because a latch-up protection circuit does not improve Rambus performance or functionality. My understanding of this clause is it covers the situation where if one DRAM mfg finds a way to improve RDRAM performance or functionality, all other RDRAM DRAM mfgs have the right to use that improvement without further licensing.

- If someone licenses the RDRAM core from Rambus, I do not believe it is implied that the licensee can build that core without obtaining all the other licenses required to build that product. There are numerous licenses required to build any semiconductor product. In other words, just because a DRAM manufacture buys a design from an outside party like Rambus, it does not mean they are free to build that product without obtaining all the other required licenses. It is the manufacture that carries this burden, not Rambus. If this was not the case, how could any outside design house operate without obtaining every semiconductor related license.

I do not see how Infineon has a valid claim here but I have not seen the actual licensing contract. All of the above is speculation on my part. Do your own DD.

Yes, this makes sense to me now - Infineon is taking a shot in the dark on a wing and a prayer. If Rambus actually made anything it would matter. BUT cross-licensing agreements with all the rest should cover this nicely.

Any opinions ZEEV or nayone.
