North Sea Oil Boom Continues

ABERDEEN, Oct 5 (energy24.com) - The North Sea is booming, as current world oil prices push UK oil companies’ rates of return to their highest level for 15 years, according to figures from the UK Office for National Statistics.

Return rates on North Sea assets rose to 33.1 per cent during the second quarter, 2000, as manufacturers figures dropped to six per cent.

BP, Shell, ExxonMobil and TotalFinaElf are all expected to post double profits this year, whilst those companies geared more strongly to the area are expected to do even better.

Although under increasing pressure to make some changes, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, is thought to be opposed to introducing a windfall tax on oil companies.

He does not want to be seen as making changes in response to short-term market fluctuations.
