eng, That is a fascinating contrast in organizations and talent. I had the opportunity to view technology policy within SBC from both the tech making the recommendation and later, sadly, a management role. While the discussion always started with price, performance, and features, the decision never matched and was due to strategic considerations. In the latter role, I came to understand strategic meant we've already decided what to do and we ain't changing.

Engineer

That's a nice piece of history! When you built the dsp did you use simulation or emulation to test? If emulation, did you use Quickturn Designs or Mentor Graphics?

eng - W-CDMA from the ETimes articlre about the future of 3G

totaltele.com

Conventional WCDMA can support data rates of 384kbit/s in mobile environments and up to 2Mbit/s in stationary situations

What is "Conventional W-CDMA"? I mean where can I buy this stuff or see it working today?

OK assuming these is such a thing as "Conventional W-CDMA" what are the comparative speeds for cdma-2000?

Best regards,

L

eng- I keep reading about W-CDMA and yet it is harder to actually see one than it is to see the Yetti.

Now all these European countries have extorted nealry $100bn in 3G license fees and the serious Asian markets have more or less given the licenses away. For instance the Japanese market for 3G is likely to be comparable to the European one since the Asians have a somehwat greater need for 3G in view of the handwriting and keyboard issue. Now the three Japanses biggies have their 3G for free.

The Euro biggies on the other hand are now loaded up with debt and their credit ratings have been cut.

Now comes S.America.

But 3G is in the future and 1X is here now. Can I ask if there is likely to be any improvement in 1X? I mean what if the 1X throughput were to be increased to say 1/2Mgbt or even 1Mgbt. Is that possible? OK if so then what happens to a country like Korea for instance that is already 100% cdma and has 1X in service and being deployed?

What I'm getting at is that if 1X were capable of being enhanced then is it possible that the 3G license holder has less of an advantage.

I noticed from the British license that it specifically referred to potential enhancements to the existing system.

Take S. America. Countries there are about to start the auction system for 3G. But some of them have already allowed cdma-one and by definition 1X.

These S American countries, bowing to European pressure in the hope of desroying the cdma-2000 opportunity will be the first to have this duel system where the 3G license holders will be saddled up with debt and have to face 1X.

See what I'm getting at? If the difference so far as the consumer is concerned between 1x ( enhanced if possible) and 3G is percieved to be small then the 3G license holder will have a serious problem on his hands, saddled with debt and a market that doesn't really need him.

Best regards,

L
