InterDigital Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: IDCC) announced today its plans to expand its UMTS product portfolio to serve the third generation (3G) wireless market. In addition to continuing to develop system on a chip (SoC) modems for mobile end user devices, the Company now intends to expand its product portfolio to include base stations modems, radio resource management software as well as other devices targeted at the expansive 3G market. InterDigital expects to bring the products to market throughout the next five years as the 3G market emerges and grows. Mark Gercenstein, Chief Executive Officer of InterDigital, said, "We have over twenty years experience developing CDMA and TDMA core technology for both terminal units and infrastructure. Indeed, InterDigital is one of the few companies that has actually designed and fielded full TDMA systems and full Wideband CDMA systems. We believe that this system level expertise, combined with our ASIC design and system software expertise, sets us apart as a component supplier and development partner." "Operators are committing very large sums of money to 3G licenses as they prepare to offer advanced wireless services, while equipment producers are investing heavily in new product development for this huge market," Mr. Gercenstein continued. "They will need access to technology and products that can both quickly and efficiently help them maximize their revenue opportunities. We can meet their needs because of our extremely strong heritage of wireless technology and product development and our depth of experience with Wideband CDMA technology, including both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD)." "We can offer technology, products, development and systems expertise and full solutions which speed time-to-market for manufacturers and operators," he explained. "We will offer those solutions, either directly or through alliance partners, to the infrastructure and handset manufacturers who will serve the operators." "In particular, InterDigital is one of a very small number of companies that can offer end-to-end TDD solutions. TDD is the ideal technology for handling high data rate needs, particularly in 'hot spot' locations, where a high concentration of wireless customers are connecting to the Internet or receiving large amounts of data. TDD, which is designed for the unpaired frequency bands currently being allocated in many countries, provides operators with a real opportunity to use wireless spectrum very efficiently, maximizing their revenue," Mr. Gercenstein said. The portfolio of 3G W-CDMA products currently under development by InterDigital includes: *FDD and GSM Dual Mode Capable ASICs *FDD, GSM and TDD Tri-Mode Capable ASICs *TDD ASICs for base station applications *Single-mode TDD ASICs for terminal units *Radio Resource Management Software Consistent with market requirements, the ASICs will include an integral DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and microprocessor, I/O ports, Bluetooth support, locations services support, multimedia support, advanced RF interface and peripheral interfaces for keyboard displays. As part of its product portfolio, InterDigital will also offer core modem building blocks to semiconductor companies and OEMs. These building blocks will include VHDL representation for both FDD and TDD modes, as well as Layers 2/3 FDD and TDD system protocol software. Mr. Gercenstein commented: "I believe that we are one of the leading developers of 3G technology. We have the expertise, the people and a history of wireless innovation that places InterDigital in a class of its own. We will be actively pursuing partnerships, technology transfer agreements and aggressively hiring top level engineering staff to complement our existing teams." InterDigital has a long heritage as a developer of digital wireless technologies and currently holds over 800 patents and patent applications worldwide in both TDMA and CDMA technologies. As an active participant in the standards process, InterDigital has contributed IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) to the 3G standard and has essential and commercially desirable patents in all modes of the 3G air interface standard. InterDigital is developing both FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) and TDD (Time Division Duplex) W-CDMA technologies compliant to the 3G standard. The company is currently working with Nokia on the development of TDD technology. TDD and FDD are two of the key technologies to be utilized in 3G products. The 3G standard also includes FDD Multi-carrier CDMA (referred to as cdma2000), Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephone (DECT), and UWC-136, an evolved form of the TDMA-based U.S. TIA/EIA-136 digital cellular standard. InterDigital is creating innovative solutions for mainstream wireless applications that deliver cost and time-to-market advantages for its customers. By leveraging its technology and intellectual property into third generation standards and products, it is maximizing its long-term revenue and earnings opportunities. InterDigital has a strong portfolio of patented TDMA and CDMA inventions which it licenses worldwide. For more information, please visit InterDigital's web site: www.interdigital.com.interdigital.com
