Keegan couldn't hack it, Red

His failure to use Kevin Phillips this summer in Euro2000 ultimately led to his departure.

I remember his days in Liverpool. He was great! I'll never forget that fall evening in 1978 in the Kop witnessing the second leg of Nottingham Forest and Liverpool in the first round of the European Champions Cup. Liverpool were the holders and Forest had won the old First Division the previous year. The draw was obviously rigged. It was an epic scoreless tie. Forest moved on based on their first leg 2-0 victory at City Ground where rookie Gary Birtles had scored both goals. Shilton and Clemence in goal. Dalglish, Highway. Umm! How fine. The pitch was glorious. The Kop was a gas.

During that fall, I also saw Leeds United face Manchester City at Maine Road and Manchester United take on Peter Jennings and Arsenal at Highbury. Rumminege in Munich, Rivera in Napoli, and Johann Neeskens with Barcelona at Anderlecht in Brussels (Cup Winners Cup) were other high points of that six-month jaunt I took around Europe.

But the best? Getting to see Johann Cruyff play in London. It was a friendly between the Cosmos and Chelsea. I worshipped Cruyff. I still can't believe those Germans won the 1974 World Cup. What a pity!

See you in Cuba some day, John
