Earlie,

Thanks for the excellent post -----> part of the reason MSFT will fall in the crappa after it disappoints or discloses negative projections for growth, revenues or earnings when it reports on the 18th.

best...

What if we already had this year's October rally last year?

From Michael Murphy:

"...Historically, technology starts rallying at the latest around October 15. We are there. So, I am fully invested. In fact, I have taken most of my funds on margin. I am not advocating that you do that necessarily, because I think you have to be watching things every day if you are doing that. It is definitely a time to be fully in these stocks...

...You will not believe how much money we are going to make just in the next six months!"

If Mr. Murphy's precious tech stocks hit the skids any further, no one will pay for his advice any more. Wouldn't want to make a call that would contribute to a shrinkage in the subscription base...

Earlie: I share your concern for the PC sector which has failed to make any recent progress for their products. The level of differentiation between dell, compaq, ibm, or gateway is pretty much a joke. It all boils down to the latest "upgrades" from MSFT and INTC.

However, let's take a moment to reflect on Sony's products. I can now buy a box that let's me edit videos from my camcorder, listen to a CD, watch a DVD, download my vidoes or pictures via i-link or memory sticks, & zip along on the internet. I haven't even touched my Windows ME platform or required the use of my 1GigaByte Pentium.

The pc industry has been plagued by the complete inability to understand anything associated with the word digital. Sony is the company best positioned to capitalize on the products related to every area of computing, multimedia, home entertainment, etc.. They have developed digital TV's, camcorders, cameras, pc's, notebaooks, dvd's, and cd's that can share information.

Sony is the leader of the wired world as they have digitalized the entire gambut of products. FWIW, I would trade in my whole basket of pc stocks for Sony.

To Earlie: Very lucid post. However, it is at this point explaining the obvious, given the tech wreck we are experiencing. I have no doubt you have been bearish for 2 years, but you had to suffer major pain at least until this March. Given stocks like MU are already down 58 pts. and have a forward PE of 10 or 11, are you still negative and believe these guys will continue to sell off? Wall ST. is now almost unanimously in your camp now. Every day, analysts seem to pick out what hasn't collapsed and do a downgrade just to get into game. Are you concerned that your peers who were on the other side of the ledger for these past years have turned around and joined you en masse?

while inventory level is probably the major reason behind the current slump (Intel, dell, compaq, msft) I would not necessarily agree on your view on valuation. If there is an hyperinflated sector that's the internet one, even at the current prices. Within telcos i see good value in e.g. Lucent.

Inventory problems did occur in the past 2 years and yet Intel could recover from that. This is probably an opportunity and an inflection point. :

an opportunity to selectively buy value and an inflection point in that business won't be 'as usual' any longer.
While I keep investing in Intel with confidence i am becoming more wary about many others, and not only about the "godzilla.com" league.
