Ian,

BTW, I've noticed that Dreyfus Brokerage, www.edreyfus.com, has better commissions and service on options than any other broker. I've used Dreyfus (formerly Pacific Brokerage) for more than a decade. They charge 1.75 per option contract with a $15 minimum. Thestreet.com's recent survey of online brokerages rated them #1 for ease of option trading.

I am considering selling out-of-the-money leap puts of a basket of semiequips. At US $15.75 per 9 contracts commission, I think the transaction cost is minimal, as long as the contract is sufficiently liquid. Of course, these are not the only factors to consider. <g> But with the downside protection and the income it provides, a put write program offers a reasonable alternative to a straight buy and hold approach IMHO.
