That's where compassion and reason comes in. In a world of limited resources, would one rather immunize 1,000,000 children or take care of a spina bifida baby for a year that could have been aborted. The costs are roughly comparable.

Well you might not, but lots of people would. Some people won't make an exception for rape. Other won't even allow one for health of the mother. Some won't make an exception for incest (after all it's not the child's fault it is a product of rape or incest). I am not sure, logically, how you can not interfere when the baby is abnormal but can justify interference when it is normal. Let me remind you that many animals will eat or kill their own young when under stress. That's a law of the jungle too.
