Frank, the welfare issue was definitely a prime-time Republican-milked issue in past elections. It was a hot button issue like abortion, gun control and the drug war.

Interestingly, virtually every study I'm aware of on the issue of welfare showed most were women with children and that the average stay on the roles was around two years. However, much like the "Gore's a liar" GOPwinger smear campaign, these recipients could do little to defend themselves and they got smeared hardy, taking a bad rap from the smearful GOPwingers, in ala Willie Horton style and imagary, etc.

You should be thankful that Clinton established a strong economy which helped solve a lot of the economic problems folks on welfare were experiencing. I think you make an ill-formed decision when you think that, generally, people do not have considered opinions of themselves, whether on welfare or not.
