I wish I could post the Variety Fair article. It is one of the best on the human side of a politician I have ever read. I too found myself being charmed by Bush's swagger until I read this and realized the truth about the psychological make up of the man. Yes Gore is son of a powerful politician too but there's a big difference. Gore actually works hard and really cares about issues that affect people (even if you disagree with his issues you have to give him that). Bush said when he turned 40 "I'm all name" and the truth is he still is. Even as Governor of Texas he had limited power and never worked hard at it. He just had the smoozy swagger and looked good and represented something very Texan. He is a poster boy for several things; pure nepotism, big oil white boys country club and trying to carry on a legacy his grandfather began.

I don't like it when Gore embellishes because he doesn't need to. I think that's a fair slight character flaw. But he is the real thing, the kind of man you want in that position of power. He loses against Bush on charisma but he's not the stiff people say he is. Take it from Tommy Lee Jones who knows him best. And Tommy Lee is a serious dude. He doesn't suffer fools or exaggeration lightly. I've met Tommy too. You do not bullshit that guy.

Bush is hiding some things from the American people as he must to win. One, he is dyslexic and doesn't like to read or study. Two, he has always been lazy including avoiding the military in Alabama. Three, he was one helluva a party animal in his younger days and had to stop because it was destroying him. McCain was too (though not as much as Bush) but he admitted it. Bush is also a snob which I don't like. He's always had it so easy he doesn't know any other way to be. His wife can take credit for cleaning up his act. She threatened to leave him if he didn't stop drinking. That's pretty serious stuff. And his so-called religious conversion? No one close to him remembers him ever talking about it. It was a conversion of ambition, not soul. Elect Bush and someday history will reflect all of this clearly. All jmen have character flaws (see Clinton) but the best presdients are those who are serious about the job for the right reasons. Unfortunately those men are not always the ones elected (see McCain).
