I have used G* just inside windows, but further inside buildings (except perhaps very flimsy constructions) only works very occasionally in my experience (which has only been in the UK and Sardinia (Italian island) so far).

No, Iridium was digital. It was an adaptation of GSM with a special speech coder using a very high degree of compression.

If at least half the sky is clearly visible, then G* is excellent. With one quarter of the sky visible, the signal comes and goes as the satellites pass by, but it is still possible to make calls lasting a few minutes. Handovers between satellites are free of any artefacts (due to "soft handover"). Call quality is excellent.
