Paul - RE: "They said ALi can not keep their chipset sales level this quater, and possibly next quarter, because ALi's major client, Dell, just decided to use non-Intel CPU. I guess they are talking about AMD."

I thought Dell only uses only Intel motherboards and therefore only Intel chipsets?

Paul, I wonder if Dell can get the pipeline filled with AMD in time for Christmas?
A lot depends on the mobo makers. As far as I know Dell takes a unique shaped mobo. Of course if this was put in place a while ago when the magnitude of the P-4 problem became known then the first mobo are being tested right now.
All the other parts are standard so this will be the only problem as far as I can see, except, of course, does AMD have enough parts to fill a line or more of Dell's production. dell of course may have a few black projects on the drawing boards that involved testing and qualification of AMD parts for months now, just as part of strategic planning so they may have qualified AMD from A to Z already.
Great shot in the arm for both companies if true.

Nice job coloring the title paul...

Indeed, we all know how likely those rumors are but, if dell would finally decide to open their eyes, I guess the info could easily leak from the chipset vendors... err, would dell really take the risk of ordering the chipsets themselves in number, subcontract an OEM mobomaker (Jabil? AOpen?).. that is not the way they use to do business. Isn't Dell inventory allergic?
They would rather ask a mobo company to come and park a truck full of Socket A mobo and buy them hundred at a time.
