My idea that morality shouldn't be forced on others is my opinion. And when I say morality I mean MORALITY- not a very low standard of common decency- which is what the law grants us. Not killing someone, or assaulting them, is a fairly low standard for behavior and does not constitute the entirety of MY social exchanges with people. The fact that we keep moral pressure to a minimum in this country, via our laws, has quite a lot to do with our separation of church and state- since so much "morality" (if you want to call it that, I don't) comes from organized religions.

My idea that morality shouldn't be forced on others is a utilitarian judgment coming from my observations that it would be darned hard to decide which morality to force on everyone.

Now, on to law. Indeed it can be whatever the society agrees it will be. In this country laws are bounded by the great personal freedoms we are allowed under our Constitution. (of course we can always get rid of the constitution if we want to). One of the examples you use- the laws prohibiting murder, for example, are less morality than SELF PRESERVATION. You can call that morality- I call it rather low morality if it is indeed morality at all. In my opinion morality is a system of "rights" and "wrongs" much more complicated and much more exacting than law.

So now, I've said most of what I already said. AGAIN. Please don't bother me again until you look up the previous post which already addressed this entire subject matter.
