Europe's Number One Optical Provider Adds Metro DWDM, New Long Haul Transport and Complete Management Platform to North American Solution Set
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Marconi (LONDON: MNI), a global supplier of advanced communications, today announced three new products that round out its optical networking portfolio for North American service providers. Already the largest optical networking equipment provider in Europe and fourth largest worldwide, according to Dataquest's January 2000 report, Marconi is leveraging its experience and technology strength as it targets North America.

"We're using our experience as the industry leader in Europe SDH networks to rapidly expand our optical portfolio for North America," said Dave Lewis, executive vice president and general manager, Optical Networks and Network Management, Marconi. "We are providing North American service providers with the products, support and network expertise necessary to be successful in today's competitive environment."
The new products introduced today include the SmartPhotoniX PLT(TM)solution for long haul transport, the SmartPhotoniX PMM(TM)solution for metropolitan DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing), and ServiceOn(TM)OverView 3000 management system for next-generation optical networks.
"Marconi has been quietly piecing together a comprehensive portfolio of optical networking products," said Nancee Ruzicka, program manager, Yankee Group. "It will be interesting to see what happens as Europe's optical leader sets its sights on the North America market. Marconi has become an exciting alternative for North American service providers."
The PLT80 and PMM are both well suited to the dynamic, high-volume North American carrier market. By enabling remote addition of new services to the network, the PLT80 and PMM provide a flexible, manageable platform for end-to- end optical network architectures.
Carriers require rapid provisioning of services with accurate, verifiable Quality of Service data and the Marconi ServiceON OverView 3000 management platform is positioned to provide that for next generation SONET and DWDM networks end-to-end.
The PLT80 and PMM point-to-point system are available now. The complete ring-based PMM solution will be available in 2Q 01. With these additions, Marconi's North American optical networking portfolio provides an end-to-end managed optical solution from the metropolitan or regional access point right to the network backbone. Portfolio highlights include:
-- PLT40 and PLT80: scalable line system carries 2.5 or 10 Gbit/s over 40 or 80 wavelengths and enables service providers to remotely add new services in a matter of minutes, without truck rolls. The platform can easily be scaled to 1.6 Tbit/s. -- PMA(TM): the industry's first remotely re-configurable ring-based optical add-drop multiplexer enables service providers to add new wavelengths in a matter of seconds. -- Marconi Solstis ultra long haul initiative: cuts network costs by enabling optical transport over thousands of kilometers without regeneration. -- PMM: Flexible, cost-effective metropolitan DWDM platform enables service providers to easily -- and cost-effectively -- add new carrier-class services. -- MCN7000: cost-effective next-generation SONET platform combines functionality of optical cross-connect, add-drop multiplexer and data switch/router into one high-density, multiservice platform. -- ServiceOn OverView 3000 Management System: gives service providers a single point of management to efficiently monitor and rapidly provision end-to-end services on their next-generation optical networks. -- Marconi tunable laser: industry-leading tunable laser combines high power output with wide tuning range (anywhere across the C-band, and into the L-band). -- SmartPhotoniX digital wrapper: implemented across the portfolio, from the metro to the core, enables service providers to truly build end- to-end managed optical networks.
"Because all of our SmartPhotoniX products use common digital wrapper technology, they enable carriers to create one communications path from the metro access point to the backbone of the network," Lewis said. "This allows service providers to quickly add new services across different network segments and to manage quality of service end-to-end."

/NOTE TO EDITORS: Background on the Marconi SmartPhotoniX PLT80
The flexible Marconi SmartPhotoniX PLT80 line system offers the flexibility to provide a responsive service today, and create a platform for the future. It enables service providers to provision a remotely manageable, high-capacity optical network that is both traffic and bandwidth-transparent.
Flexibility:
Support for up to 80 wavelengths on a single fiber pair
Ability to accept wavelengths directly or via integrated transponders
Compatible with different fiber types
In-service upgradeable
Remote management and control
Modular architecture enables service providers to add capacity as demand
warrants
2.5Gbit/s and 10Gbit/s capability
Value-added Features:
Bi-directional on a single fiber pair
Optical sub-network connection protection
Retains the benefits of SDH/SONET protection for all types of traffic
Managed by the proven, and widely deployed, Marconi management systems
Background on the Marconi SmartPhotoniX PMM
The SmartPhotoniX PMM is designed to provide a high level of functionality, performance and ease of use, while maintaining a price that enables DWDM to become a viable solution for metropolitan applications. Key features include:
Marconi digital wrapper: Marconi's SmartPhotoniX PMM implements the same digital wrapper technology used in Marconi's long haul transport products. By creating one communications path from the metro access point to the backbone of the network, Marconi enables service providers to quickly add new services and to manage quality of service end-to-end.
Dynamic, remote re-configuration: Through the use of multi-rate transponders, new services can be added, remotely, in a matter of seconds without disrupting other traffic. Plug-and-play solution eliminates need for an optical set-up.
Compact, low-power consumption: Up to 16 wavelengths in a single sub- rack, under 400W per sub rack with 16 transponders.
Dependent upon configuration/application, PMM has a capacity of up to 32 protected wavelengths.
The SmartPhotoniX PMM point-to-point system is available now. The complete ring-based solution will be available early next year.
