Jim,

RMBS isn't craping all over the industry for mere money. This mess is only indirectly related to cash.

I'll grant you that to RMBS supporters it is likely 99% about money. ...It certainly isn't performance. <hee>

But to the players themselves this all began and will end as a war over ownership and control of memory technology. Its Revolution vs Evolution. And despite Bilow's best efforts I am still convinced that its just another Theatre of the Great Wintel War of the PC era.

Unfortunately Uncle Andy's crew isn't as sharp and quick as they used to be. The little ugly duckling they saved from the gutter has grown up and now, to everyone's surprise, its just an unnaturally large and ugly Goose, ...leaving its gargantuan (and radioactive) calling cards on every lawn in the neighborhood.

It should come as no surprise that the Neighborhood Association is not going to allow this to continue. Having asked the putative "Owner" of the beast to curb its unwanted appetite for the community's children, only to find that the beast is out of control and has already eaten two of its "Owner's" own offspring, they have taken matters into their own hands.

I don't know what kind of neighborhoods you folks are familiar with. But it's obvious to me that this Goose will soon be "cooked". <vbG>

Re: Texas Instruments has sued just about every company in the DRAM business and is currently collecting 125M per quarter in royalties

That's an excellent example of why the Rambus business plan is in trouble. TI has a portfolio of thousands of patents, including many of the seminal semiconductor patents, and the basic patents on memory.

And they collect $125 million a quarter.

Rambus has about 100 patents, including one that applies long used techniques to memory, and the stock price reflects 4 to 8 times the licensing revenue stream of TI.

It just isn't going to happen, certainly not long term (more than 2 years). TI has learned what the industry can tolerate in terms of royalties, and it is a fraction of what Rambus is demanding.

IMHO, Rambus is overplaying its hand.
