However, I imagine statistics and studies can be found showing just about anything we want- (More children killed by sharp ice cream cones than guns!)

I doubt that but more young children are killed by swimming pools then guns.

Especially if we correct for the criminality of pointy sugar cone use and call any death in a criminal context "justified".

But back on topic, as a gun owner, I'm embarrassed by the quality of the arguments here. These people are rabidly, devoutly believing something that isn't said in the Constitution. They aren't here to discuss but defend.

It boils down to a) it has been interpreted to be Constitutional to own guns, b) there is an expectation of the gun owners to continue to be able do so, and c) do a) and b) allow the continued ownership by private citizens to be subject to regulation.

The 2nd Amendment is pretty clear in describing what it means:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Let's see: well the word "militia" is pretty clear; at a time when there was no standing army the militia was more like a reserve. I don't see these guys being militia (unless they are doing so on weekends at the local army base). Keep and bear arms seems to apply to well-regulated militia. Reservists have the Governor of the State as their Commander in Chief, an elected official for each of the several States.

So we have the words "well-regulated" and "militia" being put into this sentence to indicate that the "right of the people" as expressed in a "well-regulated militia" shall not be infringed.

A little regulation of private ownership of arms doesn't seem to be an over the top interpretation of the Constitution. Get over it.
