Bright outlook for Vodafone

by Andrew Oxlade
06 October 2000

THE world's biggest mobile phone operator has tapped into the world's largest market, but is Vodafone really a good buy?

Vodafone, Britain's largest company, this week announced it was paying $2.5bn for shares in China Mobile Hong Kong. Experts say the deal was a good one, though small by the group's standards. The price of the stock rose more than 5 per cent the following day.

But it's not all been good news for investors of late. They have seen the shares slide from a 400p high in March down to lows of 235p last week - a decline in line with the telecoms sector as whole.

But what now?

David Harbage, telecoms analyst at Barclays Stockbrokers, says: "I would be a buyer without a doubt - it's a quality business."

The mobile phones sector is obviously seen as a massive growth area for the future but concerns have been raised over the amounts companies have been paying for the 3G or third generation licences. 3G is the technology due to replace WAP or internet-linked mobile phones.

Mr Harbage says: "There are concerns over levels of debt from 3G but the gearing is less than 20 per cent for Vodafone. That's good when compared with something like BT.

"There are some clouds on the short-term horizon but you have to think long term. With long-term private investors, you should think five years, but in reality with Vodafone you should see gains well within that time."
