To: Dave who wrote (247 ) 10/9/2000 3:37:13 PM From: mact Respond to of 325 corvis's switch i believe claims to be the first all optical switch(whether this is true is hard to assess as huber wont even tell u what he ate for dinner last night)...hence there is no limit on the amount of data that can be switched since all it is doing is re-directing photons...avci's router is prob. analogous to charlottes web's, nexabit, juniper and pluris's in which photons need to be converted back to electrons thus placing cost and limits on the amt of data that can be swtiched...the switch ciena and xros(now nortel) uses mems technology which is not a pure optical switch...but right now, a pure optical switch is not practical or even needed as ciena will tell you, since most networks are a cesspool of atm, sonet, dwdm and others...bottomline, corvis needs more news, contract wins and a nazzy reversal to get back into the 100's...im still holding my ipo shares but i am abit wary of this company as the float and shares outstanding on corvis leave little room for mistakes and ultimately running room...david huber made sure he wasnt going to make the same mistake he did at ciena(in other words, he is a very rich man no matter what corvis is trading at)...the only people that will get filthy rich off of corvis is huber and vinod khosla(kleiner perkins), the rest of us have to fend for ourselves...jmho. dave, on a side note, if u want to know of an interesting company, take a look at MRVC...they are an incubator of fiber optics cos...their first company being spun out is Luminent(active and passive optical parts) and should start to trade next month...their stake in this company alone will surpass their own mkt cap imo....but the one im waiting for is Optical Access, which is analogous to terabeam and airfiber...they just filed their S1 last friday!...its wireless optics!...they will try to solve the last mile problem with quick, reliable and cheap solutions...i think Optical Access, which MRVC owns 100%, will fetch a mkt cap betw. 5-10B....this will force MRVC to be traded at much higher levels. mact
