since autumn99, volatility is higher than I can ever remember since 1988
I attribute it to the Y2K event and aftermath
things will calm down in the coming months
but expect heat in the fiberoptic arena for a couple more years
expect heat in the wireless arena in about 6 months, lasting for a couple more years

regarding Intel, I remember telling a friend last Nov99 that their growth will slow sharply, from the 25% they were accustomed to, all the way down to the 10% range... a great cover article in Barrons last autumn featured their dedication to the PC processor world as the cause of slower growth ahead... Intel has branched into network interfaces nicely, and to graphics accelerators nicely, and lately into flash memory... their move to wireless was not yet announced at that time... well wouldnt you know? you and I talked about safe CC stocks to own, and I FORGET about the eventual inevitable slowdown ahead for Intel... it finally happened... I expected it to happen last winter, and it happened 9 months later

nothing is safe... after talking with the MantzMan, we concluded SEBL and GMST would be excellent candidates... but SEBL touched 110 and is now near 95... nothing is safe

you seem to maintain a shorterm (almost daily) perspective on your longterm holdings... your QCOM will be excellent... one month ago you bemoaned their fate... now theQ is gold... during Cuba trip, JDSU was pushing upward... but we forgot (or overlooked) its prolonged scheduled fight for SDLI merger approval... now JDSU is a dog... by Christmas I believe JDSU will be making you happy... meanwhile Rambo held up nicely last week, and you were pleased... today it fall from all the weight around it... but by Christmas you may be giggly over Rambo

nothing is safe, certainly
you have longterm horizon on your positions
let them work, or else consider selling them when they are up
afterwards, you could add weights to those positions lagging behind

the ITM calls are perfect for allowing your emotions to sell high and buy low
I have noticed a profound change in my emotional reaction to positions held in ITM calls, as opposed to margined stocks
