New sub numbers from GSM.org....

Here is an excerpt from a press release on the GSM.org site....

The remarkable growth of GSM continues unabated as the latest total of 380 million customers released today (end September 2000) demonstrates. With 400 million customers now forecast by end November this year, the Association expects that the half billion mark will be reached by mid 2001 if not sooner.

The detailed breakdown of these numbers are not yet available on the site....however the numbers from August are still posted. According to the numbers there were
292.5m and 331.5m subs at the end of March and June respectively.

This means that there were a total of 48.5m new subs were added during the third quarter vs. 39m during the second quarter. From a percentage basis there was a gain of 14.6% during the third quarter vs. 13.3% in the second quarter (and oddly only 7.9% in the first).

These numbers obviously do not take into account the number of upgrades, which might have been more significantly impacted by the lack of new models. However, if the numbers are accurate, it is hard to find evidence of a slowdown in the cell-phone industry.

Just food for thought....
