You should review Milton Friedman's work exploring what happened during the depression. Those who will be controlling the monetary and fiscal response to any significant decline in growth have.

The depression was a horrible comedy of errors - the response to a declining economy was to increase taxes and interest rates!

Things may not always be rosey, but they will not get anywhere near as bad as the depression. They say "never say never", but I think it's appropriate in this case.
