I agree with you that something in the "patent system" has gone out of hand, like patenting "methods of doing business". On the other hand, Bush dictated that the PTO will be self sustaining, so now only the big guys have the funds to pay all the increased filing fees, issue fees, examination fees and then maintenance fees. I myself (well, not I, but my "backers" who owns the patents) have decided to drop some patents in the field of superconductivity because they do not see marketable products in the next few years, and they don't want to keep paying thousands of dollars of maintenance fees on that portofolio. Tough, but c'est la vie. Now I am forced to invent "trivial" stuff that can be on the market within two three years of filing. Luckily, it is still fun, but not as challenging.
