Actually there was a fellow on the tube last night from the Wharton school of business... he was the same guy that said the market was ridiculously overvalued at 5000+. He said that the NAZ is at or very near bottom here. He said that one shouldn't be overweighting tech stocks and should be cautious but he did not say that they - as a group - were overvalued. He went on to say that for a company to justify a PE of 100 that they need to be able to demonstrate earnings growth of 30-50% for 5-10 years. Hmmmmmm, seems to me that is what CSCO is saying they're going to do... and their entre into the huge optical market should be the ticket to assure this. In the end I think (to use your words) that CSCO is a better long at $54 than it is a short. Inasmuch as it has been a better short at $70. Same holds true on this end.
