Remember when the trade numbers looked bad, (I believe) Clinton administration decided to include trade in services (where the US had surplus) in the trade numbers, not just the goods. Now, even the combined number looks bad, in fact a lot worse. Do you remember the talk of the evils of twin deficits in the 80s? The trade deficit was considered as bad if not worse than the budget deficit. How is it that the trade deficit is no longer considered even worth mentioning?

There was another change during the Reagan administration having to do with people in military service and the unemployment figures that somehow made the unemployment figures lower. I don't remember the details.

Ex food, ex energy, ex housing, what the hell is even left?

There may be some politics involved. Also, there was a study by the Economist magazine about the timeliness and quality of economic statistics of various countries, and the US about average.
