I grant that cops tend to be skeptical about the benefits of universal gun ownership, just as they tend to be in favor of speed limits. Is this because they are a bunch of strutting storm troopers intent on divesting us of our rights, or because they're the ones that have to pick up the pieces when the rights in question are abused? A complete absence of regulation concerning firearms is not going to happen; it is better to work for an acceptable regime of regulation than to insist on an impossible goal that essentially concedes the field to the opposition. IMO, anyway.
