I suppose AOL is the ultimate revenue generating model for a wireless SP doing web access. One can leave the cage, but only after passing through the SP's portal replete with lots of advertising, and lots of internal destinations. I suppose there are many AOL subscribers that almost never leave AOL since so much is provided there. Also, as you point out, the SP portal content can be tailored to the small screen of the mobile device.

I don't think true web surfing on mobile devices will arrive until mobile units are "always connected" and have larger screens. Full keyboards may also be a prerequisite, but not sure. One interesting development to watch, I think, is that as web access becomes more pervasive, the miniaturization of the mobile device (phone) will be arrested, and probably reversed.

Interesting times forthcoming, and seems the Q* will be front and center.

Okay, i-mode model is easy and convenient--maybe what the average, non-tech consumer wants. But, I am not sure it is acceptable to the American consumer who already has experienced the freedom to go beyond the AOL, i-mode model. It seems to me that the carriers would make more money if they took the Swedish model where the cell phone becomes the charge card to pay for transactions and the carrier takes a percentage. It also seems to me that the ideal is to have two choices--i-mode and universal web mode. The phone has both capabilities but you choose one in the menu and you can change it at will, depending on your desires and mood.
