HEI passes CDMA technology test in India

Hyundai Electronics Industries (HEI) has recently obtained a technology
certification for mobile phone equipment from India, an important step for entering
the huge market.

The company said it has passed a field trial test of systems and handsets for
CDMA (code division multiple access) WLL (wireless local loop) system,
administered by the Indian government. The approval is prerequisite for a firm to
sell wireless equipment in the nation.

The company is pushing to win a contract to supply equipment needed to deliver
some 600,000 subscriber lines in the nation.

The successful testing, conducted last month in Calcutta, will improve its
prospects to win the deal, which is expected to generate $70 million in sales
revenue. India is expected to establish 2 million subscriber lines of the wireless
system by 2001.
