Just one question here: why would the radiation level matter when someone's holding a phone in their hands? I don't think that too many people are able to read text too well while holding a handset directly in front of their head, and so I doubt that a large number of people will suffer the risk of a brain tumor as a result of using a GPRS phone.

Also, before we get carried away on this whole cell phone/radiation/cancer tangent, just remember that there are people out there that have been using analog phones for up to a decade now, and yet there still isn't any documented proof that handsets can lead to harmful levels of radiation being transmitted to the human brain. Still, the potential power consumption issues related to GPRS could be a major problem with regards to battery life, especially as more power-consuming data-oriented features get embedded into phones (i.e. PDA software, MP3 playback, etc.); but since GPRS phones are only in the process of being released, there still isn't enough information out there to determine just how much of a battery drain the technology will be.

CONTINUOSLY on 2x,4x,8x voice speed (and full power)
while holding the phone to the ear??

On the other hand I've always understood GPRS is about
having both a packet air interface and an instant burst rate
higher than voice speed.

And on the third hand I've understood that when one
doesn't speak, but listens, at least every other time slot isn't
transmitted, freeing it for data as well as the
rest of the network and the additional bonus, saving
battery power.

Additionally not that difficult to detect if the power
cord, the ear piece is plugged in or not, etc and
additionally at the outskirt of a cell, kind of
really basic things.

Specifically as the CDMA guys have a long,very long
experience in more serious, chaotic near far problems,
power control, shrinking and dynamically, suddenly
breathing,gasping cells with ramping hickups,etc..

P.S. Maybe "fast power control" should be called "fast
capping control"?? (headline: CDMA POWER TO BE CAPPED!!)
