I have dysthymia which sometimes veers into outright depression, especially in winter - seasonal affective disorder makes the dysthymia worse. I found out that what I needed to make me feel better and be more effective was more dopamine, not more serotonin, so I take Wellbutrin, and I also am taking Deprenyl, which has not been approved by the FDS for depression, but is used for that purpose in other countries, and it does increase dopamine. Other people need serotonin, and can benefit from Prozac. There are other antidepressants, I don't know what they all do. Some people get relief with natural substances like kava-kava or SAM-e, but I did not. But you should realize that the reason that vigorous aerobic exercise works is that it releases the endorphins you say we need. Not only that, but I think that increased oxygen efficiency causes the brain to feel less sluggish, and exercise helps you sleep. Ish probably would feel a lot better if he got enough sleep. I saw something on CNN in August about research which shows that the body only makes human growth hormone during REM sleep. Human growth hormone is very important for physical fitness, it increases muscle, decreases fat, and helps fight disease, and if it's only made during REM sleep then light sleepers are making less of it than those of us who dream a lot. The researchers hypothesized that's why people make less human growth hormone as they age, because older people have disturbed sleep patterns. And Ish is always complaining about not getting enough sleep. One reason may be that he may have sleep apnea, but I can't get him to get tested. Another thing that disturbs REM sleep is alcohol. I get a lot of REM sleep because I take melatonin and GABA, which I buy at the health food store. I am not the healthiest person in the world, but I do try to take care of myself. Now that I have cut sugar and flour out of my diet, I find that I have much more energy. My next goals are to quit drinking alcohol and coffee, but these remain aspirations, for now.;^) Many, if not most, of us hard-core SIers drink a lot, and probably have addictive personalities. SI is a "drug" and so is the Internet in general. I need my regular SI "fix" or I get irritable.
