QUALCOMM and Glenayre Sign CDMA Modem Card License Agreement


SAN DIEGO and CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2000-- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and Glenayre Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:GEMS), a worldwide provider of communication solutions for the mobile community, today announced that they have entered into a CDMA modem card license agreement. Under the terms of the royalty-bearing agreement, QUALCOMM has granted Glenayre a worldwide license under QUALCOMM's CDMA technology and patents to design and market innovative solutions for third-generation CDMA (WCDMA, cdma2000, TD-SCDMA) and 1xEV (HDR) applications. The royalties payable by Glenayre are the same irrespective of the licensed CDMA standard.

"QUALCOMM is pleased to license its technology to Glenayre for the development of CDMA and HDR enabled wireless solutions to fulfill the demand for Unified Messaging in the rapidly expanding CDMA marketplace," said Steve Altman, president of QUALCOMM Technology Alliances. "This agreement with Glenayre further supports QUALCOMM's vision of providing CDMA-enabled devices with innumerable applications to consumers and businesses worldwide."

Glenayre plans to build on its Wireless Unified Messaging Services (WUMS) strategy by developing new solutions that merge WUMS with the Internet and CDMA carrier networks for delivery to worldwide customers who currently use Glenayre's UMS products as well as into new distribution channels.

CDMA technology provides larger bandwidth availability enabling the Glenayre development of integrated voice and high bandwidth data for the active world. Using the modem card license, Glenayre will develop next generation CDMA-based wireless devices that will bring integrated voice and data wireless to a variety of personal communication devices and operate on CDMA digital networks.
