Jacob,

Today Pakistan has the Bomb. Tomorrow, Uganda? The Palestinians? The Tibetans?

No offense intended jacob, but this is an entirely inaccurate, ignorant statement. Tibetan Buddhism is based upon nonviolence and if they are going to rise up and fight their enemy, it will not be the rich nations as you alluded to, but rather the PRC which has been suppressing the country and their religion for the past 50 years. But they have shown the world that violence simply does not reside in their hearts.

OT -- My last word on this (for today anyway ;)

With the unemployment rate below 4%, workers can get whatever work situation they want

Not so. The employers demand you produce a certain amount of work and take on projects. As this "assembly line" is structured, you cannot perform the job on a part time basis. The system is not designed such that someone else can pick up where you left at 1pm or so that you can split the work week. There are special cases to the contrary, but by and large ours is a system in which each person's work is done individually rather than as a team. There are no provisions for knowledge transfer on an on-going basis to allow others to fill in for you at the end of the day. Nor are employers willing to create such a system. At best they see it as too expensive. At worst they will consider such part time employees as lacking comitment to the firm and their jobs.

Re:With the unemployment rate below 4%, workers can get whatever work situation they want, and employers have to adjust. If workers wanted fewer hours, they could make it happen

Are you speaking from experience or from your lounge chair? This is simply not true. Employers dictate the terms of employment. Some, who are progressive may work with the individual and there are those in high tech who need programmers and the such and will do anything they can to get them since they are in such short supply. But by and large, employers dictate when you will work and for how long. Not following orders more times than not will only label you as a NON-Team player.
