Pat, It was surprising to see how a company like Lucent that misses so many earnings estimates still managed to do well in its Microelectronics unit, which includes it optical components biz. That success should tell investors how robust the demand is for optical components.

Actually it did not occur to me either just after they warned. Only figured it out later in the evening that this is good for JDSU, SDLI, GLW and also NT.

It is going to be a great opportunity tomorrow for funds to shift into good stocks that are getting hit unfairly. IMHO, the drops (if any) would be very short lived.

? How about Sagawa saying it was the only company in the sector he was recommending? Hmmmmm. . . talk about bad timing.

He's already retracting:
Lucent took too long to address fundamental internal problems," said Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Paul Sagawa. "They were too willing to explain them away."
