Ruby Ridge and Branch Davidians were anomalies, yet these wacko groups are held up by extreme gun nuts as examples of government gone crazy

I'm no expert, but my impression was that the Ruby Ridge incident involved an individual and his family, rather than an organized group, and that it was not very well handled by the Government (it should perhaps be noted that the incident occurred under the Bush administration). The Davidians are a different story: if the Feds come to serve a warrant and you shoot a few of them, you generally expect something pretty unpleasant to happen, even if you do hide behind your kids.

What I think is deceptive is the attempt to portray this as a new phenomenon. Government use of force has been testing the limits for a long time (remember the whisky rebellion); it occasionally has to be reined in, but that does not represent any fundamental change in the way things are.
