Thanks for the explanation. I was under the impression that the partition involved a manual process, that's why I was skeptical about the performance claims. As far as the need for optimal design of the schema, I think I know where you are coming from.

But still, I can see a situation where a system with this type of partitioning actually performs worse than a single, non-clustered/partitioned system, especially in situation that involve update to multiple tables that happen to reside on different physical machines.
