Seldom Blue,

"They have what they need. If the price is good, maybe they will get what they want."

Sounds like a line from Donna Summer's, "Bad Girl."

SanDisk strikes my fancy, as I believe we remain in the need department, as consumers scramble to get their 16MB flash memory for their Kodak DC-215's.

Seldom Blue,

PC Growth

Thanks for coming to my defense, although I still feel like I am somewhat on shaky ground here. John has some important points. There are new software applications which may drive higher-end PC growth and voice recognition will definitely be a "killer app" for many businesses once the wrinkles are ironed out. I still don't see most households going out and buying voice recognition software as a must have.

The other point I wish to make is that many businesses, both large and small, upgraded their PC base last year. This was a MAJOR capital expense in my organization and the Y2K upgrade is clearly a one-time event that both spurred PC growth (via upgrades) in 1999 and will diminish interest on the corporate level for subsequent capital purchases in 2000 and 2001.

All IMHO.

Perhaps there's no great need for people to upgrade PC's, but what they WILL upgrade is their modem -- to high-speed DSL or cable. They'll also want their PC to interconnect with other devices, such as digital cameras. Maybe PC chips won't be in as much demand, but chips are being used in many more products than PCs.
