Many PC users have never used a Mac, or have used them only a little. They don't want to switch because the Wintel world is familiar to them, or because they prefer it.

This may be true for existing users, but there are still lots of first time buyers, or people who are wavering because they want to buy a machine for another member of their family.

The problem Apple has now is that these people walk into CompUSA, see a 450MHz G3 15" monitor iMac for $1299, then walk into the next aisle and see an 800MHz PIII 17" monitor Gateway for the same price.

That's a hard sell to the first time or wavering buyer.

Allen,

Hmm, between your comparisons and Fernando's one would think PPCs are not at such a disadvantage. My Athlon seems much faster than my G4 in everything except those AltaVec thingees though. Maybe over the long run when everything I use is AlteVec'd things will be different.

You could be correct though.

My gut feeling is that there is something screwy in the stats at Fernando's URL. Don't know if you were around last summer when I posted a third party URL, touted by Apple, comparing CPU and FPU performances of PIIIs, G4s and Athlons. Apple posted it because the G4 500 was handily beating the PIII 600. Funny thing was that they seemed to completely over look the Athlon 600 edgeing out the G4 in both CPU and FPU. And that was just before the debacle when Apple reneged on G4 500 machines.

Who knows? G4s may be faster than PIIIs in multiprocessor systems. It doesn't seem plausible to me though if the G4s are running OS9. It seems entirely plausible on a UNIX based system like OSX. I'm sure someone with more expertise will comment on this.

Anyway, like I said I'm happy waiting this bear out. We'll see about Apple. It's all on OSX and Moto now. Maybe this devaluation will be good medicine for the inflated egos at Apple that have screwed up the interfaces, and they'll get it right. Considering how long it took investors to figure out that Apple was back last time I think I've got plenty of time.

I think there are a lot of bargains out there. I'm in no rush, I'll miss the bottom but that's OK.
