I agree that the income from WCDMA would be substantial, but isn't the key question the TIMING of all this build out? A WCDMA infrastructure is inherently more costly in terms of both equipment and use of spectrum. With the capital investment being made in spectrum now, it is likely that NO SERVICE will be available for WCDMA for several years, and that's just fine with the likes of Nokia and others using the GSM standard. It's a question of planned obsolesence, where those who are committed to GSM will milk the very last penny out of that standard before they are forced into 3G.

So in my view the key factor in adopting WCDMA is the delay in implementing it, which works against QCOM or Spinco and in favor of the stodgy GSM types.
