"Ask yourself why hasn't DDI's EZWEB kicked i-modes butt."
----------

Up until the recent merger, NTT was the only carrier with a national footprint - the only carrier who could provide service everywhere in the country.

A bit of an advantage for NTT, yes? Involving nothing to do with I-Mode. Only with a level playing field in this area can you compare popularity of value-added services. We shall see hoe the new DDI/IDO competes over the next months.

Also, why will carriers worldwide gravitate to I-Mode - and share proceeds with NTT - when they can develop their own version (with proprietary content if they wish)? The technology is not proprietary (develop their own browser-based (versus WAP) service with same or better features - graphics)- and keep revenues themselves? And WAP will catch up with graphics, etc. (I am no fan of WAP.)

And outside of Japan, I-Mode is not a dominating "brand" like AOL. It's chances of becoming one in fortress Europe are nil, and for competitive reasons nearly nil in the Americas. As for Asia, I don't even see NTT's Korean buddies SK buying into I-Mode...
