Healthcare and retail stock news:

PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. (PHSY), the operator of medicare managed-care plans, warned Q3 results could range from a loss of 10 cents a share to break-even due to higher-than-expected costs. The company was expected to earn $1.90. This could be the day' disaster! PHSY closed at $32 5/8.

Nordstrom Inc. (JWN), the upscale retailer, warned it expects earnings for Q3 will be lower than expected because of slow sales and higher price markdowns and expenses. JWN closed at $15.69.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH) to buy Lifemark Corp. (LMRK), the company that manages health-care plans for elderly people, for about $63 million in stock. UnitedHealth will pay $10.55 for each Lifemark share. LMRK closed at $9. UNH closed at $105.88.

Trigon Healthcare Inc. (TGH), the managed-healthcare company, gave upside guidance. The company expects Q3 profit from operations to be 89 to 93 cents a share. It was expected to earn 79 cents. Trigon closed at $59.50.
