It's one of those things that sounds logical, but history is seldom logical. It also sounds like it could ge one of those things that become a created fact somewhere, or are based on a smidgen of fact which as it moves from person to person takes on additional aspects until it emerges as a fact with no close connection to reality. If anybody else here knows, or knows a historian of the period who knows, I would love to know whether it is really true.
