Book value seems to come into play for tech companies when they make horrible execution mistakes far worse than Intel's recent gaffes. Huge losses usually accompany these gaffes.

Recently, IBM, AAPL, and DEC lost a lot of money at one point or another. And all of them bottomed out right around book value.

It's hard for me to imagine Intel losing the kind of money that those companies did. Then again, it would have been hard for me to imagine Intel at 37 a short month ago, so you never know, I guess.
