Delphi, Palm see Internet service for autos

NEW YORK, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Handheld digital organizer maker Palm Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) and Delphi Automotive Systems Corp. (NYSE:DPH) have invested in Mobile Area Inc., a company developing an Internet service platform for autos, Mobile Area said Wednesday.

Mobile Area said it will provide a service to enable in-vehicle access to data, mobile Internet services and entertainment through voice-activated devices.

Also investing in Mobile Area is the Mayfield Fund, a Silicon Valley venture capital fund.

Financial details were not immediately available.

Mobile Area is seeking to develop services that integrate handheld computers, mobile phones, personal data, Internet content and voice recognition. Mobile Area said it expected to launch the platform and service in the second quarter of 2001.

Delphi Automotive is the world's No. 1 supplier to the auto industry.
