OT hmmm... not sure I want to launch into this, but perhaps for another post or 2 :-) first, the bulk of SS $$ do not get invested in anything. SS $$ ppl pay in go to those claiming SS benefits. if the $$'s aren't there, societal problems arise and multiply. and IMHO, it gets much uglier than simply a lower std of living. a bigger rift between the haves and have-nots can get very ugly. ppl always expect the gov't to bail them out. for now, I'll refrain from commenting on the insurance analogies, 'cause I'm sure we'll both get banned from posting here if we start in on that one :-)
