<<Your theory is what, exactly??>>

I think this God damn "victum "idea that has been promoted by the likes of Jessey Jackson is not helping matters. If you have been convinced that the deck is stacked against you it's much easier to justify cheating

Discussion on the idea of accepting responsibility by black leaders might be a start.

Yeah,it's much easier and more profitable to start a little retail coke business or robbing liquor stores than getting an education and joining the mainstream. But as you and I well know it leads to nowhereville. Further more since so do they [as they see it every day] I suspect it wouldn't be quite so hard to make it more accepted amongst the subcultures that we are discussing.

I sure as hell would like to hear JJ spend more time telling black youth that they can succeed in the mainstream than complaining how unfair it is for black boys to be suspended from school for fighting

Every group has hard core that are difficult or impossible to turn around ,jail is the only place for'em. But there are many more that could go either way.The culture that says that bad is good and every one is screwing you makes it easy for them to follow the wrong path. OTOH simplistic "Just say no" instructions by individuals who garner absolutely no respect are worthless IMO.These kids are street smart and BS isn't going to impress them.

Every now and again I hear of some ex con who has devoted his life to demonstrating the futility of a life of crime. He speaks their language .Amazing how the truth can be so obvious when spoken by one who has been there...I suspect that these men are capable of changing lives. We need more of'em.

Realistic education [ not everybody is going to college ] can lead to real job opportunities......A good finish carpenter can make $30 and hour....I know craftsman in the trades working for themselves making $300 a day......But you gotta start at the bottom.Which isn't so hard if you see the light at the end of the tunnel....Education, job training and the resulting job opportunities if they are available to all and I think that they almost are set the stage for the solution.

What is then needed IMO is more honest talk on an individual level from parents and those that are respected about responsibility, the inevitable consequences of a life of crime and encouragement that they can have the "Dream"

Cos, I don't think we are really that far apart.....My disagreement is with "circumstances force".......

If the explanation is "it ain't your fault" ......you can't fix it. And in the finial analysis each individual must fix his/her own life...All the counseling, encouragement, job training and opportunities are worthless with out the acceptance of responsibility for this ......All JMHO
